The police said that this took place in the night between October 2 and 3, and that perpetrators are "for now unidentified."

The prosecution in the town qualified the incident as the criminal act of desecration of the tomb, while the police investigated the scene and are looking for the perpetrators.

The website 24sata.rs is quoting officials from a public company in charge of maintenance of the town's cemeteries, who said that "vandals and metals thieves" had on previous occasions targeted the graves there, stealing copper and brass.

The Orthodox cemetery is located in the central parts of Novi Sad and is listed by the Institution for the Protection of Cultural Heritage Monuments. It is the resting place of many illustrious persons from Novi Sad's history and culture.
