The prosecution says that police officer Miljan Raičević in March this year shot and killed Đorđe Zarić from the distance of five centimeters, although the situation did not require him to use force.
Interior Minister Ivica Dačić says that police will not interfere with decisions coming from the judicial institutions and that "everyone must take responsibility for their actions".
Dačić added he did not wish to comment on the fact that the indictment contains claims that contrast the police statement issued in the wake of the incident.
Zarić was in the passenger seat of a car that defied police warnings to stop and ran several red lights. The early morning chase in Belgrade ended when officers forced the car to stop.
But neither the victim nor the driver obeyed an order to exit the vehicle, police said. Their version of the events also states that Raičević's pistol went off when Zarić hit his arm with the car's door.
