Prosecutors from the U.S. Justice Department have agreed to cooperate with War Crimes Prosecutor Vladimir Vukcevic in the case against Peter Egner. Three Justice Department representatives, together with Vukcevic and his colleagues that are working on cases of war crimes during World War II, assessed measures whereby cooperation could continue in the form of exchange of information and in other future cases of common interest, the War Crimes Prosecutor’s Office announced. U.S., Serbia to cooperate in Egner case The prosecution and the Special Investigations Office are investigating and prosecuting individuals suspected of war crimes, crimes against humanity and human rights violations, regardless of nationality or when the crimes were perpetrated. In late August, the War Crimes Prosecutor’s Office submitted an application to conduct an investigation against Egner on suspicion that as a member of the Gestapo and an SS Unterscharfuhrer he took part in the genocide of Jews in Serbia, and called on the War Crimes Chamber to take the suspect into custody. After the U.S. Justice Department asked the Federal Court to strip Egner of his U.S. citizenship because of the crimes committed in Belgrade, proceedings have now been launched in the U.S. to that end, after which Serbia will apply for his extradition, concludes a statement.
