Everything is ready for Gazprom's major acquisition in Serbia, Dmitry Medvedev says. The Russian natural gas giant's president of the board of directors was visiting Belgrade yesterday when he said all the papers were now ready, and that a contract on the sale of Serbia's oil monopoly, NIS, will be signed "very soon". "Gazprom will buy NIS very soon" Medvedev, likely to win Sunday's presidential ballot in Russia, also visited NIS refineries in Pancevo, just north of Belgrade, and held a meeting with the management that was closed to the public. At the same time, Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller signed an agreement with Srbijagas General Director Sasa Ilic, establishing a joint Serbo-Russian company that will design and organize the construction of a trunk gas pipeline through Serbia. Both deals are a part of a broader energy sector cooperation between the two countries, signed in Moscow on Jan. 25, at the highest state level. NIS General Director Srdjan Bosnjakovic said after meeting with Medvedev that he agreed the deal should be signed as soon as possible, so that "real investment can begin". Medvedev specified the overall investment will stand at EUR 900mn. Gazprom will, according to the protocol signed in January, acquire a 51 percent stake in NIS for EUR 400mn, and invest at least EUR 500mn through 2012. A Serbian government delegation will travel to Moscow on Wednesday, it was announced in the meantime, to conduct talks with an expert working group, set up to improve economic and trade ties between Serbia and Russia. One step already taken is visa abolishment – government officials say all visas between the two countries will be abolished shortly, and explain this is very important "for strengthening future relations between Belgrade and Moscow".
