BELGRADE As of Monday, VAT rate in Serbia rate rose from 18 to 20 percent, while the tax added to basic foodstuffs remains the same - at eight percent. The Ministry of Finance has said that "it is expected that the latest rise in VAT would bring around RSD 35 billion more in the budget in the next year, and thus help trim the budget deficit". VAT, excise duties, prices increase Excise duties on diesel will amount to RSD 42, and liquid petroleum gas RSD 30 per liter, while those on leaded gasoline will be increased to RSD 55 per lite. The unleaded gasoline figure will stay the same - RSD 49.6 per liter. As of today, the specific excise duty on cigarettes will also rise from RSD 33 to 43 per pack, and the plan is to increase it by another RSD 2 on July 1, 2013. The changes have also been introduced in relation to excise duties on coffee, RSD 80 for raw and RSD 100 for roasted coffee beans. Starting today, Belgraders will be paying more for heating and city transportation fares. The monthly bill for the heating of a 60-sq meter apartment will thus be RSD 1,000 more expensive, reaching some RSD 6,400. As for the city transportation, a single ticket now costs RSD 70. Economist Goran Nikolic commented for B92 to say that a rise of some 0.9 percent in overall prices is to be expected, but warned that justifying price hikes of food with the latest measures would be "unfounded", and advised against "mixing up the higher VAt with the drought". Meanwhile, Milica Bisic of the Ministry of Finance and Economy told Belgrade's Vecernje Novosti daily that it would depend "above all on the producers" whether they would "transfer the burden to their consumers": "That depends on the competition, and also on their appraisal as to the budgets at the disposal of households. Some will probably transfer the burden of the increases entirely onto their customers, others won't." The Fiscal Council, on the other hand, came up with a precise figure on how much more money the citizens will now be spending, and said this number was "0.89 percent". B92 Tanjug
