Cheese from Serbian mountain nominated to UNESCO list

The municipality of Sjenica has nominated the technology of preparing the famous Sjenica cottage cheese for the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage list.

"Speaking about the significance, it needs to be noted the benefits are numerous. Firstly, it is a way of preventing this product from disappearing and merging with industrial and low-quality cheeses, it prevents abuse, it brands and promotes exclusivity and quality, which would also boost the agricultural and tourism capabilities of the Sjenica region", says Sjenica Assistant Mayor Mustafa Baltic.

The nomination was prepared by the municipality in cooperation with the Institute of Ethnography in Belgrade, and the monitoring of the process will be done by the Regional Center for Agricultural and Rural Development.

The nomination is expected to be reviewed in December 2016.
