Speaking on the first anniversary of the Russian campaign, Peskov said that "Russia’s Commander-in-Chief Vladimir Putin, after making the decision to assist Damascus, had not even once voiced any estimated timetables for the military campaign."

"At the same time, the main goal was announced, that is assistance to the Syrian people and army in their struggle against terrorists who had occupied a bulk of the Syrian Republic by the time our operation had begun," he said, according to the Russian agency.

The Beta agency is quoting AP as reporting that "Russia's declared goal was to support the Syrian government of Russia's long-term ally Bashar Assad - and Peskov insisted that in that respect the operation has been a success."

The American agency also said in its report that if was not for the Russian involvement, the Islamic State "group" - and "other terrorists" would have been "sitting in Damascus."

Asked to comment on "figures cited by the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights" on casualties as a result of the airstrikes, Peskov said he would not comment on reports by "a group based in the UK."
