Serbia's ranking in the 2016-2017 Global Competition Index has improved, with the country now up four slots to 90th among 138 countries.

The World Economic Forum announced this on Wednesday, Beta has reported.

Switzerland, Singapore and the U.S. retained their top three rankings, while Yemen brings up the rear as 138th, the agency said.

Only Bosnia-Herzegovina (107) ranks worse than Serbia among regional countries. Macedonia (68), Croatia (74), Albania (80) and Montenegro (82) all rank better, Beta said.

According to competition rating criteria, Serbia is 53rd in the world, according to its health care and elementary education, 69th in its higher education and training and 74th in infrastructure.

Tanjug said in its report that Serbia is at the bottom of the list when it comes to innovations (108) and business sophistication (120).

Other areas where the country falls behind include efficiency of product and labor markets, and development of the financial market.
