Peace is the fundamental priority for Serbia, and the Serb Republic (RS) will not disappear, Serbian PM Aleksandar Vucic said in New York Tuesday.

"It seems to me that my message is very clear and very strong, and also in line with the Dayton peace agreement."

His comments came after Sefer Halilovic, a wartime commander of the Muslim forces in Bosnia, said the Serb entity in that country "would disappear" if it holds a referendum on RS Day.

"Such statements, whoever they come from, are certainly not good. Serbia will do its utmost not to see peace disrupted and any statement in that direction, from any side, is bad and unnecessary. We need peace at any price and we will keep it. We respect the integrity of Bosnia-Herzegovina, but the RS will not disappear either, and this is in line with the Dayton Accords," the Serbian prime minister said.

Vucic also announced he would "soon" speak with Bakir Izetbegovic, the Bosniak (Muslim) member of the tripartite presidency who currently chairs this body, and other politicians from the region about "calming the tensions."

In a statement issued earlier in the day, Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic, who is also in New York for the UN General Assembly, accused Halilovic of being an unofficial spokesman for Bakir Izetbegovic, and said his statements constituted "the greatest threat to peace and stability in the region."

Izetbegovic, who is also in New York, did not comment on Halilovic's statements in any way, Tanjug has reported.
