Slovenian business daily <em>Finance</em> has likened the shape of the EU with that of Yugoslavia before it fell apart.

"EU resembles Yugoslavia before it collapsed"

"It seems that no one believes in such an EU any longer. Even (Slovenian) President Borut Pahor, as the eternal optimist, did not hide his doubts as to whether the EU can survive the way it is," the editorial said, while STA noted that Pahor last week spoke at a gathering dedicated to "the deepening of European integration."

Pahor, however, also spoke about his vision of "the United States of Europe" - which the Slovenian newspaper thinks sounds as feasible as the reforms plan of the last Yugoslav Prime Minister Ante Markovic did in 1989.

The debate about a fiscal union is another thing reminiscent of the time before the collapse of Yugoslavia, according to the article.

"Just as Slovenian taxpayers once reasonably questioned the benefit of setting aside money for Kosovo and other poorer parts of the federation, many rich EU member states are now asking why they should set aside money for some poor countries, without even knowing where they are," STA quoted the editorial.

"One of them is the neighboring Austria, where Chancellor Werner Faymann yesterday (Monday) resigned because of poor election results, while this situation favors the far right. I doubt that anyone in Slovenia who remembers the time 25 years ago envies the British, the Germans or the Austrians because of their pragmatic self-love," the author noted.

"If Slovenian companies can survive the farce of the government of Miro Cerar, they'll survive Britain's exit from the EU as well," the Slovenian newspaper concluded.
