530,000 migrants passed through Belgrade - city official

All this means that Serbia today has the largest population of IDPs in Europe, and that most of them are located in Belgrade, she said after a session of the Council for Migration Management in the Territory of Belgrade, held to mark International Migrants Day.

Popovic said the city of Belgrade was "very engaged" in solving their position and status, and that the council's role is to "monitor the population and provide any assistance."

"The city and the Belgraders have demonstrated their humane approach many times, while the council's work will surely mean that these activities are better organized, with precisely determined tasks of each participant in the process," she said.

The council today also adopted the plan of work for 2016, that envisages providing permanent housing and improving housing conditions for at least 50 families who have already started building their homes, and the buying of at least 30 village households.

The city plans to shut down 17 informal collective centers by handing out building materials and buying households with plots of land in the country.

Other planned activities include better access to information for refugees and IDPs, their professional training, additional work qualifications, and providing administrative and expert support within the country's healthcare system.
