Hungarian police use tear gas against refugees

The Hungarian police used tear gas to disperse the crowd, and also deployed helicopters and water cannons at the scene.

The Hungarian police openly threatened to use force if refugees attempted to enter the country. Reuters is quoting an unnamed spokesperson for the Hungarian government who said that "people with metal bars and poles are attempting to enter the territory of Hungary from the Serbian side."

He described them as "an aggressive group of refugees."

Hungary closed its borders on Monday after enacting new, tougher border protection legislation.

After this, refugees moving through the Balkans en route Western Europe from the Middle East, Asia, and Africa, started heading toward Serbia's border with Croatia, but about 1,000 who arrived at Horgos earlier are not giving up on waiting for Hungary to accept them.
