16 years since murder of brothers Bytyqi

Recently, the U.S. Congress initiated a new resolution in which it emphasized that the achievement of justice in the case is a major factor in improving relations between the two countries.

The brothers Bytyqi were born in Chicago and joined the so-called "Atlantic Brigade" of the KLA in April in 1999. They were arrested in the SRJ, and killed later the same year.

Asked whether there was any progress in the case, 16 years after the Bytyqi brothers were released from custody before they were murdered, U.S. Ambassador to Belgrade Michael Kirby said:

"Sixteen years ago, Ylli, Agron, and Mehmet Bytyqi were brutally murdered. Sixteen years is far too long for any murder to go unsolved and unpunished. No state should allow murderers to kill with impunity. I urge the Ministry of Justice and the War Crimes Prosecutor as well as the government to promptly take the necessary steps to render justice."

Serbian police minister Nebojsa Stefanovic said last month that significant progress had been made in the Bytyqi case.

"We have some new evidence arising from bases of mobile telephony. And from listings indicating that there were some additional persons at the site where the crime was committed," said Stefanovic, adding that the police came into the possession of weapons from 1999 which are now analyzed.

In 2006 an award-winning documentary entitled, "Crime and mystery - the case of the Bytyqi brothers" was produced by B92. Today marks sixteen years since the Bytyqi brothers were ordered released from custody. Has there any progress on the Bytyqi brothers' case, as far as you know?
