The proposal, put forward by the provincial government, received the support of 58 deputies, 14 were against, and eight abstained from voting.

In its explanation of the proposal, the provincial government said that the activities of VANUK will create conditions that will “ensure equality, preservation and respect for the diversity of cultures of the national minorities - national communities in Vojvodina".

The province's secretary for science and technological development Vladimir Pavlov said that the proposal for the establishment of VANUK is in line with the 2012 decision of the Constitutional Court of Serbia to declare unconstitutional the competencies of the Vojvodina Academy of Sciences and Arts (VANU).

Opposition deputies in the assembly, mostly members of the Serb Progressive Party (SNS), said that VANUK is a “political project of the provincial government” that violates the Constitution.

Vladimir Galic of the SNS noted that a branch of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SANU) exists and operates in Novi Sad, and that therefore there is no reason to form VANUK.

Vojvodina Assembly Vice-President Djordje Milicevic of the SNS said that the Constitutional Court will determine whether or not the decision to establish VANUK is in accordance with the Constitution.
