Abbas thanks Serbia for support in UN

At a joint press conference held after a meeting with Nikolic, Abbas thanked Serbia for supporting the rights of Palestinian people, and especially for voting in favor of Palestine becoming a non-member UN state at the UNGA voting.

He also said he briefed President Nikolic on international, Arab and French efforts to adopt a draft resolution which would end colonization of the Palestinian territories and set a deadline for the independence of the Palestinian state, with borders from 1967.

Abbas also stated he and his counterpart discussed situation in the region, developments in Syria, Lebanon and Yemen.

Pointing to the historical friendly relations between Palestine and Serbia, Abbas voiced hope the two countries will foster cooperation in all fields and on the international scene.

The Palestinian president also stressed the importance of the association of Palestinian people in Serbia in terms of strengthening the ties between the two countries, and backed the efforts they make to provide education for Palestinians in Serbia.

"There are no outstanding issues between Serbia and Palestine and the two countries only want to deepen the good relationship they are enjoying," Tomislav Nikolic said after his meeting with Abbas.

Speaking during the joint press conference, Nikolic pointed out that there was much room for improvement of economic cooperation and initiatives to “twin” certain cities of the two countries were encouraging.

Both Serbia and Palestine are countries expecting donor aid or investment from outside, and need to have investors convinced that their territories are stable, secure and peaceful when it comes to climate for doing business, the Serbian president.

“We will certainly have arrangements that will prove we also have trade ties, but I find commercial exchange not to be a way to judge friendships,” Nikolic said.

The Serbian president said that the two countries were preparing a draft agreement on educational cooperation, adding that 15 students from Palestine were currently studying in Belgrade.
