The waste has been inventoried and its condition ascertained, and now the funds required for its disposal must be found, in the country or abroad, he said.

Cleaning up hazardous waste stockpiles at companies such as Zupa in Krusevac, EI Nis, Zorka Sabac and Prva iskra Baric, among others, is the basic prerequisite for getting foreign investors interested in them, Mitrovic noted.

The issue of hazardous waste is a national security issue and the state must find the best model for its disposal, Mitrovic said.

Serbia still does not have a physical-chemical treatment centre, although that is an obligation tied to EU accession, and after 2019 we will no longer be able to export hazardous waste, Mitrovic added.

"For the time being, Serbia has only one hazardous waste landfill - at the Smederevo steel mill - while, for instance, Hungary has as many as 46 privately-owned waste furnaces," Mitrovic said.

Each year, Serbia "buries" EUR 50 million in landfills through inappropriate stockpiling of waste that can be recycled or used as fuel, he said.
