The content of the message, however, remains unknown, but the newspaper noted that the SPC "undoubtedly does not view favorably announcements that Stepinac could become a saint."
Mamberti will also take with him to the Vatican another letter dedicated to the same subject, sent by the Serbian president.
In an interview for Politika published in Sunday, SPC Patriarch Irinej said the announcements from the Vatican that Stepinac could be canonized by the end of the year came as "a great surprise" for the Serbian Orthodox dignitaries - "because in order for someone to be a saint, they must be a truly shining and holy personality and be accepted as such by other Christians."
Peggy, Stepinac did tick the box. Its called getting rid of Cancerous Serbs from catholic soil. Those that remain are already speaking Croatian. By 2050 there will be no Orthodox Serbs as such in Croatia.

@bob,
one can take the position that titles of governance are useless labels. they're simply titles given to people with a modicome of perceived power. their real power comes from the populations they serve believe that have power. its just as abstract as any power a religious person might have.

Is the Catholic church so short of saints that it has to scrape bottom of the barrel?
I thought that in order to become a saint there has to be some miracles perfomed first. How did they tick that box?

If we assume religion is a nonsense, then logically the idea of sainthood is no more than an inventied label given by men in silly hats.
However. In this case it is clearly inappropriate to give any kind of positive label (human or devine) to the memory of a man who is associated with the instruments of a wicked genocide as done by Croats let loose by the German Nazis.
At one level it doesn't matter - it's only an invented and rather meaningless label, but I support these orthodox priests in their objection - the label would be an insult to those who were murdered.
