Russia could "remember" permission to use force

“The key task now is to de-escalate the conflict,” he said, according to ITAR-TASS.

The permission in question was given on March 1 by the upper house of Russia's parliament to President Vladimir Putin.

It authorized the use of Russia’s armed forces in Ukraine “until the situation normalizes” in the country.

Churkin also said he called on UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to publicly denounce Kiev's military operation in southeastern Ukraine.

"I explained that it was necessary to return to implementing the (joint) statement made in Geneva on April 17," the diplomat added.

According to him, Russia does not feel isolated in the UN because of the situation in Ukraine.

Churkin stressed that the UN Security Council was divided and that no serious action can be expected from that body when it comes to solving the conflict in the southeast of Ukraine. He made that comment when asked about the possibility of a UN peace mission being deployed there.

Meanwhile in Kiev, Ukrainian PM Arseniy Yatsenyuk said that Russia "wants to start the Third World War" through what he said was "military and political occupation of eastern Ukraine."

According to him, this conflict "could spread to the rest of Europe."

"The attempts to cause a military conflict in Ukraine will lead to a military conflict in Europe," Yatsenyuk told his ministers, according to Reuters.

In a live televised address, he warned that "the world has not yet forgotten the Second World War," and that Russia was "already trying to start the Third."
