BELGRADE -- An image posted on Twitter, making light of the start of NATO's war against Serbia, has prompted the authorities to react.

It was originally posted on her Twitter profile by Vlora Citaku, a member of the government in Priština, and then picked up and retweeted by Oana Lungescu, a spokesperson for the western military alliance, on her official account.
It came on the day marking the 15th anniversary since the start of NATO's 1999 bombing campaign against Serbia.
The Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said late on Monday that the gesture was disrespectful toward those Serbians killed by NATO during the 78-day war. It also said that "such moves do not contribute to the cooperation between Serbia and the alliance."
The ministry noted in its statement that March 24 is also marked remembrance day for the victims of the NATO bombing campaign, and that Assistant Foreign Minister Miomir Udovički discussed the matter with NATO's military liaison office chief in Belgrade.
Serbia's diplomatic representatives in Brussels also spoke with NATO representatives, the ministry said, and told them that "such actions show disrespect for the Serb victims of NATO's bombing, and do not contribute to the cooperation between Serbia and NATO that is realized through the NATO program Partnership for Peace."
NATO's spokesperson, however, maintains that it was appropriate for her to retweet the image on the same day. Late on Monday, Lungescu defended the gesture by saying that the retweet "in no way had the goal of disrespecting the victims of the 1999 conflict."
Instead, said she, it was "a retweet of a tweet thanking NATO for saving civilians from ethnic cleansing in Kosovo. NATO reacted quickly to protect people in Kosovo in 1999 and our peace mission KFOR continues to provide a safe environment for all people in Kosovo based on UN Security Council Resolution 1244."
In Belgrade, the Serbian government's Office for Kosovo issued a statement of its own, saying that the NATO spokesperson had posted "a cynical, sarcastic, and inhuman greeting."
When reached for comment, the U.S. sportswear manufacturer said that they "took their brand and slogan very seriously."
In response to a letter sent by several individuals from Serbia, including television producer Jakša Ščekić, Nike also said that the image "did not represent their officials stand" - and that company was in no way involved in posting the tweet or in creating the image.
ida, you're the stereotypical image of a Serb propagandist. Really pathetic. Inhuman really. There is no normal person that doesn't feel any remorse when innocent civilian victims are buried. Yet you manage to do just that. In medical terms such conditions are qualified as symptoms of a condition and disease.
Shameful, really shameful of you. A Serb ultranationalist knows no shame.

Your link isn't to dead children. A photo in front of a coffin shows a picture of a GROWN MAN.
I've also read that this is a reburial by Albanians - Albanians have buried and reburied the SAME PEOPLE MULTIPLE TIMES for propaganda sake.
Most of the so-called "civilians" were actually KLA fighters. Then you have had many MODERATE Albanians who were killed by KLA and NATO.
The Serbs are being falsely blamed in many cases for the killings by the KLA.
Plus many of the alleged crimes you point to are said to occur AFTER NATO bombing NOT before.
So claiming NATO intervened to stop killings which only occurred after NATO bombed show a backwards reasoning.
And the Albanians only ran out after NATO bombed and it was in coordination with the KLA.
A German reporter embedded with the KLA in 1998 and 1999 said the KLA had drawn up PRIORITY LISTS of towns to be evacuated when NATO started bombing.
These lists were seen by the reporter, who testified at the ICTY about it, 2 months before the bombing.
He says the very towns he saw on the list were in fact the first ones where refugees came from.
And it was THE KOSOVO ALBANIANS WHO STARTED THE KILLINGS.
The KLA commanders ALL had torture and death camps of Serbs (and also some Albanians were in them but they have been killed as witnesses to the KLA commanders' trials).
(ida, 28 March 2014 22:38)
Before any comments are made or even questions such as the Serbian documentary called, "WHY" to nato bombings you should check what was Just brought to Kosovo on the 15 marking of NATO intervention. I will never understand how a nation to this day can ask such a question. Here is a link to many children masacred and taken to Serbia, dumped underground and then they built a huge appartment in top of it in the hopes that the bodies will never be found.
[link] The return just happened last week after EULEX was able to pin point the mass graves...and you cry about a "re-tweet"
(buRh+O, 27 March 2014 06:28)
No matter what, this is how Serbs will be treated. Which is why I hate the thought of Serbia in the EU, and why there should NEVER be a mention of Serbia joining NATO. If that was Nike Air Just Do It of a plane flying into a twin tower, THEN it would be insensitive. It's just the way it is, and a little insight as to how Serbs are viewed. Croatians get to celebrate Operation Storm and have their 2 generals convicted of the crimes they committed just flat out released. The holiday is celebrated every year.
Pretty sad in my opinion to put out such a thing on the anniversary as an obvious reference celebrating the bombing of a country that resulted in deaths. Appaling actually. I would be just as appalled if Serbia had done such a thing, I see no glory in celebrating the bombing of someone but hey, people are messed up like that....you'll see a good sample of them here on this site (they'll be the red thumbs down to this post).
(Aleks, 27 March 2014 02:13)
@ Oh well. I didn't mention casualties, these are displaced or as the US calls them ethnically cleansed people. Nice of you to jump to conclusions though, and form opinions base on messages that you don't even read. Your sanctimonious air and assumptive attitude come shining through. All of my data has been compared and verified through government agencies and UN data. You want it..find it yourself, believe me it's not in plain view. You know,I rarely post, because of the idiocracy that exists on this forum and the sheer nonsense that people spew.
(Waiters, 26 March 2014 13:30)
Please explain what facts I'm changing?? Did you see what comment I replied to?
(Waiters, 26 March 2014 01:49)
Well I see your numbers either come from a recent update to Wikipedia citing a March 24, 2014 article in RT. Could have been updated by you or anyone. Other independent sources put the numbers of civilian casualties at much less, some on here even claim that the majority of casualties were predominantly Albanian, take sj for example he claims 10,000 Albanians were killed by NATO bombs.
Of course neither his nor RT numbers are accepted figures.
Human rights watch in 2000 put the total civilian casualties at 500 including Serbs, Albanians and others.
So you have a wide range of numbers to choose from, you choose the extreme high end showing Serbian casualties but none of these numbers have documentation only an article in the Russian press, at a time trying to portray NATO as worse than Russia.
(Oh well, 26 March 2014 12:25)
She may stand behind it but some more serious and professional high-level people in NATO obviously instructed here to remove the tweet. Such individual acts of certain people, obviously not up to the duty they are performing, are promptly rectified and certainly do not reflect the position of 28 member states that constitute NATO. I would ascribe this to lack of diplomatic tact, political depth and analytical skill of this person who does not fullly grasp the responsibility that comes with her function.
(Carmelo, 26 March 2014 10:27)
Serbia will wait until the right time to retake complete control of all of its territory.
Cheers!!
(Dragan, 25 March 2014 13:02)
Dragan,
Some day your children will wear T-shirts with that logo to which you object. It will be sooner than you think. If you visit Japan or Germany you will find that the U.S./ Nato are thought of very highly. Luckily, it won't take long to de-Nazify Serbian kids no matter how much you try to poison their minds. However, for people like you there is no easy way to cleanse their soul. As they say, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks".
(Albanian Orthodox Shqiptar, 26 March 2014 00:14)
NATO spokesperson did nothing wrong. Vulin today called NATO evil. You can't call NATO evil and then try to join EU. Majority of NATO countries are either EU members or trying to join EU and vice versa (US is excluded). When are Serb politicians going to stop pursuing two face policies?
(Avni, 25 March 2014 23:40)
There is a Serbian logo coming out soon with the slogan "Just Lose It" with the image of Kosova underneath it. haha!
(Captain Kosova, 25 March 2014 14:51)
There is also a logo I saw with an image of a wallet and someones car, with the slogan "Just stole it!" and an Albanian flag underneath.

(Oh well, 25 March 2014 18:58)
KOSO said, "JUST FYI - Nothing about the image or the ensuing tweets had ANYTHING to do with Serbia. Any decently intelligent person will advise you that image is about Putin and his russia."
Any decently intelligent person comprehends what they read.
Serbia is desperately attempting to paint a false picture of being the victims that they are stooping to the level of a stalker by monitoring GOK twitter pages.
JUST FYI - Nothing about the image or the ensuing tweets had ANYTHING to do with Serbia. Any decently intelligent person will advise you that image is about Putin and his russia.
@Veles, WOW!!! you've wasted a paragraph with one foot in your mouth and one your behind. Did you see the picture of the tweet? Bad taste, anyway you look at it, especially now. Stop comparing Serbs to the Nazi's, it's just plain ridiculous and embarrassing for you! For sheep like you who marginalize the balkan wars to Serbs=bad guys and all the rest are victims, grow up!!!read!!and understand it's a little more complicated than that. There is more than enough evidence available to illustrate where, what, when, how and WHY. Do you even know what an expansionist policy is??? Considering Serbia is the largest demographic in the region, don't you think the US and Germany know this??? Ever hear of Divide and conquor? Serbia must pay for what she did???? Again, are you just a total moron??? Last time I checked, 250000 Serb's gone from croatia, 200000 gone from Kosovo...Bombed for 78 days (over 2000 dead, 88 children dead, etc) DO YOU THINK THEY'VE PAID FOR THEIR CRIMES????? NOW WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER CULPRITS??? HAVE THEY PAID FOR THEIR'S????? Remember, Karma's a b!^@h.
(Waiters, 25 March 2014 15:04)
Maybe NATO would like it if on 9/11 officials from the Middle East will post "Burn Baby Burn" with twin towers or pentagon on the background? And claim they were greatfull that it resulted in th "war on terror" which "saved" about as much lives as "operation allied force"???
See the idiocy? Maybe not.
Stupid is, stupid does. Oh well... Glad their joy ride is finally over. Go Putin Go! :)

(Zoran, 25 March 2014 12:28)
Zoran as far as I see Serbia is asking to join EU?
1. In very easy step Serbia can ask to Join Russian Union with Belarus and Kazakhstan.
2. Serbian politicians chosen by Majority of Serbian population go and plea to join EU, I think due to geography they are doing the right thing however Serbia can choose its destiny.
3. Why do Serbs not complain for getting Vojvodina as a spoil of WW1 but complain in loosing Kosovo as War of 1999?
(Morning Shake, 25 March 2014 14:47)
who cares whether Serbia goes towards Russia? You Serbs think you're very important to the west. Go towards Russia, and END all talks with Albanian government officials we simply don't give a rats @$$. NATO did what it should have done when you Serbs committed crimes against Croatians, and Bosnians. I guess Kosova sealed the deal and stop complaining about it. NATO gave you Serbs valuable lessons. Be thankful for that and don't try to portray NATO forces as aggressive insensitive organization. I celebrate March 24th every year with many friends. It was the END of Serbian brutality, ethnic cleansing, unjustified crimes against my own people. This indeed is a day that we all can celebrate.
A very insensitive tweet. Nobody benefits from such provocation.
NATO should discipline those that have been involved and offer an apology.
(T, 25 March 2014 13:10)
This is what Serbs in Kosovo had to try to live with, complete garbage. The NATO war criminals seem to agree with this member of the Pristina government. Like two peas in a pod. KLA Organ snatchers and NATO war criminals are both pure evil. My message to them is that Kosovo will never, ever, be independent due to a Russian veto :). Serbia will wait until the right time to retake complete control of all of its territory.
Why Serbs get riled up as soon as the NATO is being mentioned? Keep ranting as much as you want but this does not help much. Serbs must be hold accountable for their ungodly deeds they commited in the recent wars. If you tell any German about allies bombardment of Germany, most of them do not react emotionally because they know damn well that Nazi regime deserved such punishment. NATO air strikes had nothing to do with anti-Serbism, neither Serbia. its time for all serbs to understand that your expansionist policy is over and you have to recognize that not everything is Serbian. Your freedom ends when mine begins. Simple as that! When you step back you realize that your wars have decreased and decimated Serbia's power once for all. You wasted for nothing your population since 1912/13 in waging wars which always ended up in bitter defeat!
(Veles, 25 March 2014 12:25)
Not sure if the owners of the copyright of the image "Nike" would be happy that their brand. Would be happy that their image was used in an offensive manner, such as this?!

What an idiotic excuse for the onset of conflict and an equally idiotic excuse for repeated failures at providing a "safe environment" for the people of Kosovo afterwards.

If only someone would have warned Milosevic and Serbia of that we would not have to have these conversations today. Oh wait, the UNSC tried, NATO tried, but he/you would not listen. Now you try to change facts, Oh well, Karma may be back!
(Oh well, 25 March 2014 18:58)
Instead, said she, it was "a retweet of a tweet thanking NATO for saving civilians from ethnic cleansing in Kosovo. NATO reacted quickly to protect people in Kosovo in 1999 and our peace mission KFOR continues to provide a safe environment for all people in Kosovo based on UN Security Council Resolution 1244."
What an idiotic excuse for the onset of conflict and an equally idiotic excuse for repeated failures at providing a "safe environment" for the people of Kosovo afterwards.

(Asteri, 25 March 2014 22:05)
A very insensitive tweet. Nobody benefits from such provocation.
NATO should discipline those that have been involved and offer an apology.
(T, 25 March 2014 13:10)
KOSO said, "JUST FYI - Nothing about the image or the ensuing tweets had ANYTHING to do with Serbia. Any decently intelligent person will advise you that image is about Putin and his russia."
Any decently intelligent person comprehends what they read.
Not sure if the owners of the copyright of the image "Nike" would be happy that their brand. Would be happy that their image was used in an offensive manner, such as this?!
(can't we JUST be direct, 25 March 2014 12:10)
Maybe NATO would like it if on 9/11 officials from the Middle East will post "Burn Baby Burn" with twin towers or pentagon on the background? And claim they were greatfull that it resulted in th "war on terror" which "saved" about as much lives as "operation allied force"???
See the idiocy? Maybe not.
Stupid is, stupid does. Oh well... Glad their joy ride is finally over. Go Putin Go! :)
(Howsitfeel, 25 March 2014 14:54)
Before any comments are made or even questions such as the Serbian documentary called, "WHY" to nato bombings you should check what was Just brought to Kosovo on the 15 marking of NATO intervention. I will never understand how a nation to this day can ask such a question. Here is a link to many children masacred and taken to Serbia, dumped underground and then they built a huge appartment in top of it in the hopes that the bodies will never be found.
[link] The return just happened last week after EULEX was able to pin point the mass graves...and you cry about a "re-tweet"
(buRh+O, 27 March 2014 06:28)
NATO spokesperson did nothing wrong. Vulin today called NATO evil. You can't call NATO evil and then try to join EU. Majority of NATO countries are either EU members or trying to join EU and vice versa (US is excluded). When are Serb politicians going to stop pursuing two face policies?
(Avni, 25 March 2014 23:40)
She may stand behind it but some more serious and professional high-level people in NATO obviously instructed here to remove the tweet. Such individual acts of certain people, obviously not up to the duty they are performing, are promptly rectified and certainly do not reflect the position of 28 member states that constitute NATO. I would ascribe this to lack of diplomatic tact, political depth and analytical skill of this person who does not fullly grasp the responsibility that comes with her function.
(Carmelo, 26 March 2014 10:27)
(Aleks, 27 March 2014 02:13)
ida, you're the stereotypical image of a Serb propagandist.
