NEW YORK The United Nations General Assembly has unanimously adopted a resolution called "The Right to Privacy in the Digital Age." This is the first UN document of its kind. UN resolution on "right to privacy in digital age" Germany and Brazil launched the initiative to adopt the resolution, because of mass surveillance of citizens "conducted by governments around the world." The resolution states that, although the collection and processing of data can be justified with protection of public safety, "states must ensure compliance with the obligations that are consistent with international human rights standards." The resolution provides the possibility for the issue of protection of privacy to be "further considered in the United Nations." (Beta/AP, file) B92
