BRUSSELS NATO member state and Russia have failed to overcome their deep differences on the U.S. missile defense system during a meeting at the NATO HQ in Brussels. "We were not able to jointly find a solution on this file and Russia is still worried, but we continue to negotiate," said Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, after the NATO-Russia Council meeting at the ministerial level. NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said that the two sides should openly and directly continue negotiations in order to resolve disputes. "It's no secret that we have not yet found a solution on how to cooperate in the field of the missile defense system," Rasmussen told reporters. The anti-missile shield, based on U.S. technology, has for years been the main topic of disputes between the western military alliance and Russia. NATO presents the project as "protection of European NATO member countries against any threat from Iranian ballistic missiles," but Russia considers it "a threat to its security."
