ANKARA Turkey will end a ban on women wearing the Islamic-style headscarf in state institutions, Reuters has reported. It is "part of the government's long-awaited package of proposed human-rights reforms," the news agency said while quoting Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's "major policy speech," delivered on Monday. "Human rights reforms" to bring back Islamic headscarves The new rules will not apply to the judiciary or the military, Reuters said, and added that Erdogan also announced plans to return Syriac Christian monastery property that was seized by the state. Other proposed measures include lowering the threshold for entry to parliament to five from ten percent of votes received in elections. Erdogan said he was proposing that private schools be allowed to teach in languages other than Turkish, including in Kurdish, "which has been banned in Turkey for a long time," AFP reported.
