BERLIN, MOSCOW German Chancellor Angela Merkel urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to use the UN Security Council to get a quick international reaction to Syria's conflict. This is according to a statement made by her spokesman after a phone conversation Merkel had on Thursday with Putin. Putin and Merkel discuss Syrian crisis "The chancellor called on the Russian president to use negotiations in the U.N. Security Council for a quick, unanimous international reaction," the statement said, adding that both leaders agreed the conflict can be solved politically, Reuters reported. Itar-Tass said in its report that Putin and Merkel underlined the importance of review by the UN Security Council of the inspectors' report on alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria. The telephone conversation was initiated by Germany, the Kremlin press service said. "The parties held a thorough exchange of opinions on various aspects of the Syrian crisis. Both sides proceed from the standpoint that active efforts will continue at the UN and through other means towards political and diplomatic settlement of the situation," the statement said. Less than four weeks before an election Merkel "faces a balancing act in how to respond to a chemical weapons attack in Syria, as German voters overwhelmingly oppose military action there," Reuters noted in its report, and added that Moscow, an ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, is seen as certain to veto any call for intervention in the UN Security Council.
