JACKSON President of the UN General Assembly Vuk Jeremic said Sunday that East Slavs have been Serbia's staunchest supporters throughout history. “The spirited defense of our (Serbia’s) territorial integrity in this century would have been largely futile without their unwavering support,” Serbia's former foreign minister said in his remarks on the occasion of the 1025th anniversary of the Christening of the Kievan Rus'. Jeremic praises East Slavs for "spirited defense of Serbia" “Our wars of liberation against the Ottomans in the 19th century would not have succeeded without their political and military assistance. Our renewed independence would not have been consolidated without their diplomatic backing,” said Jeremic, adding that Serbia’s liberations in the First and Second World Wars would not have been possible without their selfless sacrifices. Speaking at a ceremony at the St. Vladimir's Memorial Church in Jackson, in the U.S. state of New Jersey, on Sunday, the former Serbian foreign minister pointed out that the Serbian and Russian Orthodox Churches have continued to act as the custodians of the two nations’ spiritual ties, nurturing a common culture, for more than 800 years. Speaking about the acceptance of Christianity by the Rus’ people in 988, Jeremic said that St. Vladimir the Great, Prince of Kiev and Novgorod, “accepted not only the spiritual tenets of the Christian faith, but a moral philosophy founded on love and forgiveness-not just for one's friends, but enemies as well.” Jeremic pointed to the baptism in 1193 of a prince of Serbia, Rastko Nemanjic, who brought the message of Christianity to many of the Slavs who had settled in the Balkans, and “was tonsured with the name Sava by a Kievan abbot on the Holy Mountain of Athos - in a monastery established by Vladimir a century earlier.” “I believe Sava's baptism also represents the origin of the special relationship between our respective nations,” he said. “I am confident that we shall continue to stand together in the succession of the ages to come,” Jeremic said.
