BELGRADE Belgrade has joined dozens of other local self-governments in Serbia that have adopted declarations against genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The Belgrade City Assembly on Thursday voted in favor of a document that prohibits the farming and spreading of GMOs in the territory of Belgrade, a group organizing protests against GMOs, "The Citizens Have the Power", has announced. City of Belgrade adopts anti-GMOs declaration The declaration adopted yesterday calls for respect of Serbia's existing laws which ban production and trade in GMOs, preservation of traditional forms of food production, as well as production of organic foods. The declaration further urges protection of citizens against the unpredictable adverse consequences of consumption of GMOs and GMO products. Belgrade's local self-government has also taken on the obligation to undertake appropriate measures so that farmers and others taking part in the agriculture trade do not decide to illegally grow and sell GMO products. The group also announced that so far 68 local self-governments in Serbia have adopted a similar declaration, while the towns of Subotica, Novi Knezevac, Ada and Senta - all in the province of Vojvodina - will "consider" a similar move. The City of Belgrade's official website also said that the declaration was especially stressing that Serbia's public broadcaster RTS and other media should "regularly inform the public that import, growth, farming, processing and trade of GMOs in legally prohibited." While current legislation in Serbia prohibits production and trade in GMOs, reports recently suggested that a change in those laws may be necessary in order for the country to join the World Trade Organization. However, Trade Minister Rasim Ljajic said in March that this is "not necessarily true." A scene from a Serbian green market (Beta, file) B92 Beta
