BELGRADE Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic has met with members of the Standing Committee of the Conference of European Rabbis. On the occasion, he said that the friendship between the Serb and Jewish people is longstanding and the two nations are tied by having often been victims of hate. President receives delegation of European rabbis "As nations, we have inseparable ties, our destinies are tied and every time our people suffered, your people suffered as well," Nikolic said in a conversation with the leaders of the Conference, which is meeting for the first time in one of the countries of the former Yugoslavia. To the Jewish people and their spiritual leaders, Nikolic wished that they end the era of hostility they have been exposed to, the same way Serbia is now trying to end one such hostility. Announcing a visit to Israel in the near future, Nikolic said he has long wanted to see the country which has built itself from the ground up and from which Serbia has a lot to learn. President of the Conference of European Rabbis, Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt of Moscow, recalled that the Jewish community suffered great casualties in Serbia during World War Two and was not allowed to spiritually prosper and flourish under the Communist regime. Stressing the closeness between two the nations, Goldschmidt said the fact Serbia has been free of official anti-Semitism for generations is a guarantee that friendly relations will continue in the future. Rabbi Goldschmidt thanked President Nikolic on the implementation of restitution process. This is a long, but a moral process and I think together we will be able to start a renaissance of the Jewish community in Serbia, he said. Before the meeting with Nikolic, the rabbis attended a memorial service at the Old Fairgrounds, the site of a Second World War concentration camp set up in Belgrade by the occupying German Nazi forces. The memorial took place as day of remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust, genocide and other victims of fascism in Second World War was being marked. The Conference of European Rabbis brings together several hundred religious leaders of all Jewish communities in Europe. During a three-day visit to Belgrade, its representatives will have a series of meetings, see the sights of the Serbian capital and learn about the history of Jewish presence in the territory of Serbia.
