BELGRADE A cabinet minister said on Thursday that Serbian farmers "had no reason to fear that imports from the EU would surge after January 1". Deputy Prime Minister for EU Integration Suzana Grubjesic explained that " tariffs would not be eliminated at once but rather gradually, until Serbia joins the EU". Tariffs to be lifted gradually, "EU imports won't surge" Grubjesic pointed out that the state administration was "aware that Serbian farmers were not competitive enough". It is for that reason, she asserted, that the Stabilization and Association Agreements between the EU and Serbia "involved protective mechanisms, or a period of adjustment and of gradual elimination of customs duties". "There should be no fear that the tariffs will be lifted starting from January 1," Grubjesic stressed while responding to MP questions in the Serbian parliament on Thursday in Belgrade.
