VIENNA B92 has taken part in a recent conference organized by the city of Vienna, dubbed “Danube dialogue media platform – EU strategy for the Danube region”. The conference had the goal of motivating media and civil society to intensify the EU Program for the Danube Region. B92 takes part in Danube dialogue conference That could be achieved by "stepping up reporting, encouraging contacts, bringing people together, ultimately increasing economic prosperity, social justice, democracy and the standard of living in the space shared by the Danube countries," the wieninternational.at website has reported. B92's Gordan Paunovic addressed the event to call for independent reporting for a free, democratic, economically prosperous, fair and liveable Danube region, the article said. The Belgrade-based media outlet, described as "the Serbian flagship for new independent journalism in Eastern Europe", also presented "an impressive array of ideas for a fundamental change for the better in the countries of the Danube region," during one of the even's programs, the website noted. The conference was organized by the city of Vienna's Press and Information Service (PID), ORF Radio O1, the Institute for the Danube Region and Central Europe and the University of Vienna at the Radio Cafe at the ORF offices. PID's Lothar Fischmann and ORF radio veteran Rainer Rosenberg hosted the conference - both had helped during the Balkan war in the 1990s to create an open, free radio platform for the voices of peace, freedom and democracy in the Danube region on Radio 1476 made available by ORF. Vienna EU regional commissioner Johannes Hahn addressed the conference to say that the EU Strategy "should be seen as a great opportunity for stimulating growth, strengthening competitiveness, creating new jobs and improving the quality of life", noting that there were "no additional funds available for that specific purpose - but there was always money in Brussels for good projects as long as the political will existed". One of the three working groups set up during the gathering decided to "prioritize carrying out the desired dialogue about the Danube region" by using web radio, in this way "keeping up the connection between the city of Vienna and ORF in terms of European dialogue". Lothar Fischmann summed up the conference by saying that there would be “some money from the EU to present the results succinctly on the internet", followed by elaborating a strategy for presenting the Danube dialogue on a new European media platform, a task that would be completed in a few months.
