A seven-day ban of Schengen treaty will go in effect at the French-Spanish border at midnight on Saturday. The Schengen passport-free travel will be temporarily suspended in an attempt to prevent demonstrators from coming to Spain ahead of next week’s European Central Bank meeting in Barcelona. Schengen to be suspended at French-Spanish border The Spanish authorities fear that foreign activists will try to join locals in staging anti-austerity protests. According to the Spanish Interior Ministry’s decision, the security at the border will be stepped up from April 28 until May 4 when the border will be opened for free travel. Security controls at Girona and Barcelona airports will also be stepped up. The Schengen treaty, which was introduced in 1995, can be temporarily suspended “if there is a serious danger to public peace and order and internal security”. Spain announced eight days ago that the Schengen treaty would be suspended ahead and during the ECB meeting which will be held on May 3. The authorities believe that large numbers of protesters, especially from Italy and Greece whose governments introduced strong austerity measures, could come to Barcelona.
