Daily: EU advises against elections in Kosovo

The Belgrade authorities have been advised not to organize local elections in Kosovo, daily Blic has learnt. The EU member states who have recognized Kosovo’s unilaterally declared independence, advocate against holding of the elections in Kosovo and Germany and France’s have the most rigid stance. According to its sources, it is almost certain that the local elections will not be held in the southern province. The Serbian government is looking for the best possible explanation and it will most likely be “technical impossibility” to hold the elections. An option that would represent a compromise is also being discussed. According to the proposal, Belgrade would not organize the elections because of the possibility that the international forces could seize the election material but citizens living in Kosovo would be able to vote electronically. Blic has learned that the municipalities of Zubin Potok and Zvecan will probably be dissolved because their mandate expires on May 6 and that Kosovska Mitrovica and Leposavic will soon follow. Coordinators will be appointed instead of municipal structures, according to the daily. Serbian parliament Speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic was recently quoted as saying that the local elections would not be held in Kosovo but she denied the allegations, claiming her words were misinterpreted and that holding of the elections in Kosovo was a “delicate issue”. Serbian Ministry for Kosovo State Secretary Oliver Ivanovic, however, told B92 on Thursday that he was not convinced that the elections would be held because it was technically impossible to organize the elections in Kosovo. They are convinced that abolition of the so-called parallel structures would be possible if the elections were not held in Kosovo, the daily writes.

According to its sources, it is almost certain that the local elections will not be held in the southern province.

The Serbian government is looking for the best possible explanation and it will most likely be “technical impossibility” to hold the elections.

An option that would represent a compromise is also being discussed. According to the proposal, Belgrade would not organize the elections because of the possibility that the international forces could seize the election material but citizens living in Kosovo would be able to vote electronically.
