Croatia's FM Vesna Pusic said on Tuesday in Belgrade her country was yet to take a position on Serbian FMr Vuk Jeremic's candidacy for UNGA president. The Croatian minister is in Belgrade for an informal summit of foreign ministers of the South East European Cooperation Process (SEECP). "Croatia yet to decide whether to support Jeremic" Jeremic confirmed earlier he had entered the race to become the 67th president of the UN General Assembly, but added that the path to the office was long and complex. According to the media, the only other candidate is Lithuanian Ambassador to the UN Dalia Leinarte. "There are different speculations, and we received the announcement just two days ago. I must say we were a bit surprised, since this region, this part of Europe is now in line for the candidacy, and there has usually been a consensus about this, but at this moment Croatia has yet to take a position," Pusic told reporters at the Croatian Embassy in Belgrade, where she met with representatives of the Croat national minority in Serbia. She said the position had to be taken by June and that Croatia would do so. "It is more likely that we will not support (Serbia's candidature). I cannot say decidedly that our position will absolutely be such," the Croatian minister told B92. Yesterday, media reported that Pusic stated that Croatia will support Lithuania's candidate for the top UN General Assembly job. This is because Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremicc entered his bid for the office "at the last moment", she said. Vuk Jeremic's candidacy came unexpectedly, and at the last minute, she told Tanjug late Monday commenting on the writings of the Croatian news portal Vecernji list, and added that it is uncertain what the outcome of the elections in Serbia will be like. Pusic confirmed that certain talks about the support to the Lithuanian candidacy were published earlier. Croatian daly Vecernji list, citing unnamed sources from the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, reported that the candidacy of Vuk Jeremic was not met with approval in Croatia. "Croatia could hardly support Jeremic because it can not be predicted what will be the outcome of the elections, and therefore the policy of the neighboring country," the article reads.
