Đilas decides to again run for Belgrade mayor

Incumbent Belgrade Mayor Dragan Đilas said on Sunday that he would run for office again at the next local election.

Incumbent Belgrade Mayor Dragan Djilas said on Sunday that he would run for office again at the next local election. "Over the past three years, we have done great things in Belgrade. We have managed to give Belgrade a new face, mainly thanks to the courage of the coalition partners to reach a mutual agreement together," Djilas said, speaking at an electoral convention of the ruling DS (Democratic Party) Belgrade Committee. Djilas decides to again run for Belgrade mayor The Belgrade city government is made up of the Democrats, a coalition led by the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS), and the United Regions of Serbia (URS). The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) formally is not a member of the city government, but supports it. Djilas invited the newly elected leadership of the DS Belgrade Committee to support him in his intention to run for mayor again. Former water polo player Aleksandar Sapic, outgoing chairman of the Democratic Party's Executive Committee for Belgrade, was elected new chairman of the Belgrade Committee. Sapic was elected after Djilas decided to step down, since he was elected deputy leader of DS in April. Sapic was the only candidate for chairman of the DS Belgrade Committee. He was supported by 832 of 902 delegates to the convention. Djilas, on the other hand, attained a high office in the party, becoming second-in-command to party leader Boris Tadic. Media reports previously mentioned that Djilas might be the party's candidate for prime minister after the next election if the Democrats managed to remain in power.
