Serbia has made evident progress in recent years in suppressing domestic violence, but also saw a rise in brutal killings of women.

Serbia has made evident progress in recent years in suppressing domestic violence, but also saw a rise in brutal killings of women. This is according to State Secretary with the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy Snezana Lakicevic said Wednesday. Serbia "makes progress" in suppressing domestic violence "Statistical data shows a rise in brutal killings of women by their parters or former partners. 32 women were killed in Serbia in 2010, compared to 29 in the first half of 2011 alone," Lakicevic said opening a national conference dedicated to response to violence against women in the family and in partner relationships. She said domestic violence was the most common form of violence against women and its consequences were reflected in many segments of the victims' lives - housing, health care, education and the victims' ability to live a fear-free life. "As many as one third of all women are simultaneously exposed to a combination of different forms of violence, mostly a combination of mental and physical abuse," Lakicevic said, adding that home was an unsafe place for 38 percent of women. She also said Serbia still did not have a unified database on the victims of violence.
