"As regards the potential invitation to the pope, we believe it is a matter of our church and we are discussing the issue together with other Orthodox churches," the patriarch aaid in an interview for the Easter edition of the Belgrade-based daily Danas. He expressed belief that the anniversary would be a remarkable chance for representatives of all Christian churches to gather in one place. Irinej underscored that certain persons might have a different stand on the issue and that the SPC Assembly would take this into account when adopting the final decision. The final stand will probably be established during the Assembly meeting in May, Irinej said and added that the scope of the celebration will be agreed on on this occasion and that the Assembly will decide whether the Pope would be invited as well. "According to opinion of many individuals, the central celebration of the anniversary of the Edict of Milan should be staged in Nis, the birthplace of Constantine the Great," the patriarch noted. He underlined that many people believe that Nis is the most suitable location for this purpose because it "lies neither in the East nor the West, but is situated between them". As such, concluded the head of the SPC, it would "suit both the Eastern and the Western churches". Patriarch Irinej (FoNet, file)
