The population census in Macedonia, which was due to take place April 1 to 15, has been delayed until the fall. Amendments to the census law, sponsored by the ruling parties VMRO-DPMNE and DUI and passed two weeks ago, postponed the census until October. But early parliamentary elections, the date for which has not been officially set, are reportedly the main reason for the postponement. Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski has said the voting will most likely take place June 5. According to the last census conducted in 2002, Macedonia had 2,022,547 residents. The Serb community in the country counts 35,939 members or 1.78 of the population. This was a decline from the 1994 census, which registered 40,228 Serbs or 2.08 percent of the 1,945,932 residents Macedonia had at the time.
