Slovenia nuclear plant back online

The Krsko Nuclear Power Plant (NEK) restarted its production early on Wednesday following an automatic shutdown on March 23 for safety reasons. This was announced by the plant's management. The shut down had no influence on the people living nearby or on the environment," spokeswoman Ida Novak Jerele told Reuters. Jerele added that NEK had closed a week ago to protect human safety and the environment. The 696 MW plant, which produces some 5 billion kWh of electricity per year, was built by U.S. Westinghouse Electric Corporation during the time of the former Yugoslavia. NEK started its commercial operation in 1983, after many delays and extensions of construction deadlines, and the plant's current operating license expires in 2023. The Slovenian government may decide to prolong the lifespan of the country's only nuclear plant, which provides a fifth of Croatia's power, by additional 20 years. (Beta)
