The number of asylum-seekers in the industrialized world over the last 10 years has reduced almost by a half, a new report shows. In 2010 the main source of asylum applications was Serbia (including Kosovo), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has stated. Serbia main source of asylum seekers New figures published at the UNHCR website show that there were 28,900 applications from Serbia, an increase of 54 per cent compared to the previous year, when the country ranked sixth. The number of asylum seekers in 2010 is comparable to 2001, "soon after the Kosovo crisis", the UNHCR stated. According to the UNHCR annual report which included 44 industrialized countries, a total of 358,800 asylum applications were lodged in 2010, which was 5 percent fewer than in 2009, and 42 percent less compared to 2001. Afghanistan took the second place, while Chinese asylum-seekers made up the third-largest asylum group in 2010. The report does not include the statistical data of the approved asylum claims.
