The nuclear power plant Krsko (NEK) in Slovenia was put out of operation again late on Thursday. The automatic shutdown happened after a station which supplies power to Croatia went out of operation, reads a statement issued by NEK. Two days ago, automatic protection popped a switch shutting down another power station. Both incidents were described as "minor". The nuclear plant with 2,000 MW thermal power and net electrical power of just under 700 MW is co-owned by Croatia and Slovenia, so one half of its output goes to Croatia, while Ljubljana and Maribor get a quarter each. NEK's operation permit expires in 2023, and the Slovenian government headed by Prime Minister Borut Pahor wants to extend its operation by another twenty years and build a second block, because Slovenia cannot get the energy from alternative sources. Slovenian nuclear experts have stressed that there have been no major incidents in Krsko, especially not earthquake related, and that NEC was designed and built "by U.S. standards".
