A diplomatic cable sent by former U.S. Ambassador in Podgorica Roderick Moore directly links then Montenegrin government with organized crime. This is the first in a series of WikiLeaks cables on Montenegro that Podgorica-based daily Vijesti will publish. “Montenegrin govt. was involved in organized crime” The daily released Moore’s letter from 2009, revealing to the State Department that ruling Democratic Party of Socialists of Montenegro deputy leader Svetozar Marovic was directly or indirectly involved with 22 specific companies and that not a single significant business deal in Budva could be reached without him. According to the daily, the former U.S. ambassador supported his claims with information that the First Bank of Montenegro was the only one that benefitted from the government package worth EUR 40mn. Moore also informed his headquarters that former Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic owned three, his brother Aco Djukanovic 47 and sister Ana Kolarevic one percent of the First Bank shares, which gave the family a control of the bank. The daily reported that the U.S. Embassy in Podgorica did not want to comment on the documents released by WikiLeaks.
