Worker dies at construction site
A 44-year-old construction worker was killed today in a workplace accident near Ečka, in Vojvodina, northern Serbia.

A 44-year-old construction worker was killed today in a workplace accident near Ecka, in Vojvodina, northern Serbia. The victim, identified as Martin Valenta, was employed by the GIK Banat company. Worker dies at construction site The worker was fatally injured as he was digging a three-meter deep ditch, said Svetlana Sukic, chief of the local inspection service. According to her, Valenta entered the ditch that was not secured, and as he tried to climb out, one side of the ditch and the previously dug up material collapsed, trapping him underneath. Although he was pulled out after several minutes, reports said, he was unconscious during the “15 to 20” minutes that it took for an ambulance to arrive. The worker was transported first to the town of Zrenjanin, and then to Novi Sad. He died before reaching the hospital there. The victim's body was sent for a post-mortem, while Higher Zrenjanin Court Judge Goran Zec said he would make an announcement concerning the accident “after suspects from the construction site have been detained”.
