NATO chief: Balkans “top priority”
NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said that his task is to get all of the Balkan countries into the Euro-Atlantic structure in the coming years.

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said that his task is to get all of the Balkan countries into the Euro-Atlantic structure in the coming years. He met in Athens with Greek Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis and Foreign Affairs Minister Dora Bakoyannis to discuss new NATO strategies, according to Greek news agency ANA. NATO chief: Balkans “top priority” Rasmussen said that he hopes that Greece will continue to actively participate in the activities of the Alliance in the Balkans, which has yet to be “completely stabilized,” adding that Athens will take a leading role within the European Union and NATO in order for all the countries of the region to enter these Euro-Atlantic institutions. Rasmussen also met with Greek Defense Minister Evangelos Meimarakis to discuss NATO and its future. Some of the topics of discussion were included the future of the new strategic doctrine for NATO and the relations between the Alliance and the EU, as well as security issues throughout Greece’s region.
