IJAS will begin a process for rehabilitating journalists Zoran Lukovic, Srdjan Jankovic and Slavko Curuvija, who were sentenced to five months in jail in 1999. The decision to ask for the rehabilitation of the journalists was made by the executive council of the Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia (IJAS), on the proposal of several IJAS members at its last meeting on April 24, in Novi Pazar. IJAS for rehabilitation of journalists “The IJAS executive council believes, as in the time of the verdicts, that there were no elements for criminally processing the three journalists. Therefore the abolishment (of Lukovic), as an act of mercy of one of Slobodan Milosevic’s highest officials of his regime cannot be left as the basis of Lukovic’s release, because it essentially overwrites the indictment and verdict, especially since the mercy did not include Curuvija and Jankovic,” IJAS stated. The statement reminds that Lukovic, Jankovic and Curivija were convicted in March 1999 by the charges filed by Minister Milovan Bojic, who was the director of the Institute for cardio-vascular diseases in Dedinje, because of the story published on December 1998 in the daily Dnevni Telegraf in which Bojic was indirectly accused of being involved in the murder of doctor Aleksandar Popovic. Several days later, Bojic filed charged of spreading false information. A day earlier, police arrested a murder suspect in the Popovic case, stating that it was a crime of passion. The verdict against the three journalists took power in the next year, during the NATO bombing campaign. Curuvija was murdered on April 11, 1999. Jankovic moved to Montenegro, where he lives and works today. Lukovic was arrested on August 15, 2000 and taken to serve his sentence. He was released from prison on October 21. “The Serbian judicial system had a full decade to correct the injustice that their predecessors brought upon the three journalists, but it is clear that for the country, that case was made ad akta regardless of our fallen colleagues,” IJAS stated.
