Josep Lloveras says that the EU is helping professional schools in Serbia as this is one of the pre-conditions for the country’s social and economic progress. Since 2003, the EU has invested more than EUR 20mn in professional high school education in Serbia, said the European Commission Serbian delegation chief during a visit to a secondary tourism school that had its theoretic and practical studies modernized thanks to help from the EU. EU assisting Serbian education He said that half the money had been invested in equipment for the schools, while the rest was put into training for teachers and administrators. Lloveras said that the European Commission had approved EUR 168mn of aid for 2008, four million of which was destined for professional schools, and EUR 1mn for developing tourism. Educating workers in the tourist industry will facilitate the development of tourism, tourist services, the creation of new jobs and attracting investors and money to Serbia, he said. Education Minister Zarko Obradovic said that he expected cooperation between Serbia and the EU in education to continue, because there were many projects that needed to be implemented. He said that thanks to the modernization, interest in enrollment in the tourism high school had rocketed, rising from 13th to 5th place in terms of popularity. The minister thanked the EU for its help, which it has been offering since 2003, adding that the support of the EU was very important for Serbia as far as expert advice, technical education and equipment were concerned. “It is important for us to develop professional high schools and education so that we can meet market demand and employers’ interests,” he said.
