Former defense minister goes on trial The other accused include former Deputy Defense Minister for Material Resources Milun Kokanovic and Admiral Jovica Vuckovic, the former head of the Serbia-Montenegro Army’s development sector. Under the illegal agreement in question, the military was to receive 69,000 helmets and more than 60,000 flak vests, while the military had only 28,000 soldiers at that point, meaning that the state would lose out to the tune of EUR 176mn in the deal. Davinic, Kokanovic and Vuckovic are accused of abuse of office, and Dragic has been charged with attempted fraud, after the prosecution was unable to find sufficient evidence to press bribery charges as well. Dragic and Vuckovic were remanded in custody for a month initially on suspicion of giving and receiving a bribe. Dragic is also accused of illegal possession of firearms, since an automatic rifle was found in his company’s warehouse given to him by former Special Operations Unit leader Milorad Ulemek. Then Finance Minister Mladjan Dinkic uncovered the scandal in August 2005, accusing Dragic and then Defense Minister Davinic of signing a fraudulent contract worth roughly EUR 300mn. Davinic was a member of Dinkic’s G17 Plus party at the time. He resigned as defense minister on September 8, 2005, after President Boris Tadic and then Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica called for his dismissal. All the defendants are currently free on bail. The trial began at 11.00 CET at the Palace of Justice.
