Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic said tensions on the state level will lessen once a local government in Belgrade is formed. The parliamentary speaker and Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) official told B92 that new elections would be a blow for everyone in the capital. I think that if a city government is formed by August 22, it will reflect the expectations of the majority of Belgrade’s citizens. New elections would be a great blow for Belgrade,” said Djukic-Dejanovic. She reiterated that the SPS had signed a coalition agreement with “different partners” before the government was formed with the Democrats at state level. “Once the state government was formed, it made sense for it to be reflected especially in Belgrade, and that is why SPS city officials decided to scrap the agreement with the Radicals,” Djukic-Dejanovic explained. She said that it was now up to SPS city officials to decide whether a coalition would be formed in Belgrade with its partners at state level, or if there would be new elections. Asked to respond to criticism that she was being too lenient in carrying out her duties as speaker, she said that restrictive measures would not improve parliament’s work, and that it had long been known “who expresses themselves in what way.” Djukic-Dejanovic said that the declaration of political reconciliation between the Democrats and the SPS would be signed soon, adding that real practical cooperation between the parties was more important than the document at this precise moment in time. She reiterated that the SPS had signed a coalition agreement with “different partners” before the government was formed with the Democrats at state level.

“Once the state government was formed, it made sense for it to be reflected especially in Belgrade, and that is why SPS city officials decided to scrap the agreement with the Radicals,” Đukić-Dejanović explained.

She said that it was now up to SPS city officials to decide whether a coalition would be formed in Belgrade with its partners at state level, or if there would be new elections.

Asked to respond to criticism that she was being too lenient in carrying out her duties as speaker, she said that restrictive measures would not improve parliament’s work, and that it had long been known “who expresses themselves in what way.”

Đukić-Dejanović said that the declaration of political reconciliation between the Democrats and the SPS would be signed soon, adding that real practical cooperation between the parties was more important than the document at this precise moment in time.
