The Serbian FA (FSS) announced today that it had been taken aback by the arrests of two Meridian League referees. Spokesman for the FSS's Judicial Commission Aleksandar Boskovic passed the statement on to reporters at a press conference, in the absence any leading FSS or Super League Community officials. Serbian FA "shocked" at referee arrests The Commission stressed that it supported all the authorities’ measures and operations, adding that they could rely on their assistance. The Commission added that the refereeing at the Mladost v Vojvodina match on December 12, which was at the heart of the arrests according to unofficial information, had been given a very poor rating, and that the match referee, Mihailo Jeknic, had not officiated a game since. Last night, the police arrested Vojvodina’s president and main financier Ratko Buturovic, Director of the club’s Vujadin Boskov Sports Center Milan Cabic, and three referees - Jeknic, Borislav Kasanski and Goran Kovacic. Acording to a police statement, Buturovic and Cabic, with the help of former referee Kovacic, and bribes to Jeknic and Kasanski had fixed match results, and ensured Vojvodina’s high position in the league table. “We should point out that the FSS official (Radojica) Dragojlovic had given match referee Jeknic a high 8.1 rating, that the Judicial Commission later amended to a very poor 5.9. Because of his failure to supply sufficient grounds for awarding 8.1, he will not be delegated to officiate at any other matches until further notice,“ read the Commission’s statement. The statement added that in the 72nd minute of the match, Jeknic had failed to award Mladost a penalty that could have had a bearing on the final result. The commission amended Dragojlovic’s rating, accepting the verdict of special match observer, Milojko Simic. The Judicial Commission pointed out that Kovacic had spent only one year on the list of referees, before being removed in the summer of 2007.
