A witness at the Zvornik war crimes trial said today that he had imprisoned 12 armed Muslims in 1992. The witness, Pero Matic, said that this had happened in May 1992, near the city of Zvornik. Matic told the war crimes chamber of the Belgrade District Court that he was on his way to feed livestock in a nearby village when 12 soldiers appeared, one of whom was his neighbor from the village of Orahovac, Ismet Cirak. Zvornik trial continues with defense witness testimony “I told them to drop their weapons, they did not know I was alone and surrendered,” he said, adding that he had taken them to the police afterwards. Matic was proposed as a witness by the defense team of Branko Grujic, one of six accused of the war crimes in Zvornik. He said that the soldiers had been carrying eight automatic rifles, nine sniper rifles and bombs “which he took to the village on his back.” Asked whether he knew what had happened to them, Matic said that he did not know. The accused are former president of the Zvornik “temporary government” Grujic, territorial defense commander Branko Popovic and Yellow Wasp paramilitary members Dragan Slavkovic, Ivan Korac, Sinisa Filipovic and Dragutin Dragicevic. They are accused of the deportation of Muslims from the region. Grujic and Popovic are accused of displacing 1,822 Bosniaks from the villages of Kozluk and Skocic, and for knowing of various crimes and doing nothing to stop them, including the killing of 19 Muslims and torture of 163 more from the village of Divic. All of the accused, expect Dragutin Dragicevic, who has chosen to remain silent, have denied the accusations and pleaded not guilty.
