Prosecution appeals Orić sentence

He said the formal notice had been submitted as well as that the appeal was not conditioned by a permission issued by the Court council, explaining that the prosecution now has a new deadline to submit a legal explanation of its appeal.

“According to the court procedure, we do not have to seek prior permission to appeal, while in all other instances, before and during the trial, the Court council permission is necessary“, Nikiforov explained.

The Tribunal found Naser Orić guilty on two counts of the indictment, for not preventing the torture and killing of Serb prisoners in the Srebrenica police station between September 1992 and March 1993, and sentenced him to two years in prison. Orić was immediately released since he had already spent three years in the Hague detention.

At the time of the trial, the prosecution had demanded an 18-year prison sentence, claiming Orić was a warlord who plundered a starving Serb community that was pleading for help.
