EU’s doors open to Serbia
Tuomioja said that he will try and keep the doors to the European Union open for Serbia, and that this will be one of the main topics at the first EU meeting of July, scheduled for July 17. Tuomioja said that he may also be meeting with Serbian officials on that date.Tuomioja said that he hopes that Ratko Mladić will be extradited to The Hague soon so that Brussels will be able to continue its stabilisation and association talks with Serbia.
“We want Serbia to know and to feel that it is welcome to join Europe. At the moment when it truly wishes to, in other words, when it fulfils the needed conditions, it will find that our doors are open,” Tuomioja said.
The Finnish Prime Minister said that solving the Kosovo question is not directly related to the process of integration into the European Union.
“Kosovo and Serbia are the biggest challenges that we will be facing. The United Nations and Martti Ahtisaari will have precedence in Kosovo, but the EU will be there to offer support for his proposals once they pass through the UN.” Tuomioja said.
He also said that it is very important for the young people of Serbia to be able to travel to EU member countries, and he understands why the relaxation of the visa regime is such an important issue to Serbian citizens.
