The Serbian Supreme Court confirmed the verdict for the case of the murder of Ivan Stambolić.

Supreme Court confirms verdict

The Supreme Court did confirm for B92 that a decision has been made, put that it has yet to be finalised.

Court spokesperson Vesna Dabić said that the paperwork should be completed in about ten days.

The confirmed verdict sentences former Special Operations Commander Milorad “Legija” Ulemek to 40 years, along with three other former members of the Special Operations Unit, Dušan Maričić, Nenad Bujošević and Branko Berček. Two other unit members, Leonid Milivojević and Nenad Ilić, received 15-year sentences. Former National Security chief Radomir Marković was also sentenced to 15 years in prison as an accessory to the murder of Ivan Stambolić. Former deputy chief of the Security Information Agency Milorad Bracanović was sentence to four years in prison for trying to cover up the crime.

Ivan Stambolić was kidnapped on August 25, 2000 and later killed in Fruška Gora. The linked assassination attempt on Vuk Drašković occurred on June 15, 2000. Charges in relation to the crimes were also pressed against Slobodan Milosević and Nebojša Pavković, who were in confinement at Hague Tribunal at the time of the case.
